Born in Kingston, Jamaica (1980) and now based in The Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, Marlon James is a visual artist whose captivating works have graced galleries both nationally and internationally.
His exhibitions span esteemed venues such as the National Gallery of Jamaica, Punkt Ø / Galleri F15 (Norway), Gallery of Mississauga (Canada), and the Art Museum of the Americas (D.C.).
His work has been featured in Small Axe: A Caribbean Art Journal, Pictures from Paradise, Jamaica Art: Then and Now, and ARC Magazine. Marlon earned his BFA from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in 2003.
With a profound interest in the human form, Marlon’s art captures black and brown individuals within their authentic Caribbean surroundings. Initially drawn to minimalist portraits against stark white backdrops, his approach evolved after the Young Talent V 2010 exhibition in Jamaica. Seeking a deeper connection to the Caribbean identity, Marlon developed a signature style that balances environmental elements with dramatic lighting, creating portraits that are both culturally rich and visually striking.
Driven by the search for beauty in everyday life, Marlon James continues to document Caribbean narratives through his refined lens, celebrating identity and heritage with each compelling portrait.
